Long Tab — When Moisture Control Matters
An upgrade on the standard install: rolls come with a longer flap on one side that wraps over each purlin and laps onto the next roll. Result — unbroken moisture protection across the whole ceiling. Small cost premium, meaningful upgrade in humid climates or heated buildings.
How Buying Works — Three Steps
The moisture problem hidden in the standard install
The standard Energy Saver install is fast and cheap because each roll just spans one purlin bay. The trade-off — the vinyl facing (which is what keeps moisture out) ends at every purlin. The roof panel screws through that gap into the purlin below. And the pinched insulation at each purlin turns into a cold spot where warm inside air meets the cold outside — the exact conditions that make water bead up.
Long Tab fixes both problems. One flap on the roll is longer — six inches instead of the standard three. During install, you guide that long flap up and over the top of the purlin, then lay it flat on the other side to receive the next roll’s standard flap on top. The two flaps get sealed together with tape. You end up with an unbroken moisture layer that bridges every purlin instead of ending at each one.
In a humid climate or a heated building, that difference is the difference between a dry ceiling in year ten and a stained one. Warm inside air can no longer sneak up to the cold roof panel through gaps at every purlin.
Four situations where the small premium is worth it
Any building you’ll heat
Workshop, garage with a stove, home office in a pole barn, ag building with livestock. Warm inside air carries moisture. Long Tab keeps that moisture from reaching the cold roof panel and turning to water.
Humid climates (Gulf Coast, Southeast)
In summer, moist outside air pushes against the cool air-conditioned inside. Long Tab keeps that moist air out of the insulation cavity so it can’t condense on the cool side.
You care how the ceiling looks
Long Tab gives you a visibly flatter, cleaner ceiling than Energy Saver — the wrapped flap softens the pinch at each purlin. If the building doubles as a showroom, event space, or working environment where you look up, pick this method.
R-25 or thicker
Thicker insulation makes the pinch problem worse — a 10″ batt pinched down to ¼″ loses a huge chunk of its R-value at the purlin. Long Tab keeps more of your rated R across the whole ceiling.
Situations where the standard install is honestly fine
Long Tab costs about 5 to 10% more in material and takes about 20% longer to install. That premium isn’t always earned:
- Unheated storage buildings — no inside moisture, no problem to solve. Standard Energy Saver is the honest pick.
- Open ag buildings with lots of airflow — open-sided pole barns rarely trap enough moisture to matter.
- Dry climates — interior Southwest, high desert, semi-arid regions. Low humidity year-round means moisture in the cavity never gets high enough to matter.
Any of those, use the standard Energy Saver install and put the savings toward a heavier R-value or a better facing.
What you order
- Rolls with the 6″ extended flap. All four facings can be ordered as Long Tab — just say so when you call. Standard roll widths (4, 5, 6, and 8-foot in WMP-30) all apply.
- Tape that matches your facing. The seam where the long flap meets the next roll needs tape that sticks to that specific facing. Vinyl tape for vinyl facings, foil tape for metalized. The wrong tape peels off within a season.
- Optional: double-sided tape on the purlin tops. Some crews run a thin bead of tape along the top of each purlin before wrapping the flap. Keeps the flap flat until the roof panel goes on.
