Foam Board, Plainly Explained
Rigid foam board isn’t one product — it’s three, and they behave differently. Buyers grab the wrong one all the time because lumberyards sell them next to each other. Here’s how to tell them apart, the one job foam board is built for, and where you should be reaching for fiberglass instead.
How Buying Works — Three Steps
EPS, XPS, and polyiso — how they’re different
All three come in 4×8 sheets, from ½″ to 4″ thick. They look almost the same on the shelf. They’re not the same when they’re in your wall.
"R-value loss" happens because XPS and polyiso start out with special gases in their cells that block heat well. Over time, those gases slowly leak out and get replaced with regular air, which insulates less. EPS uses regular air from day one, so it doesn’t lose R-value.
The one job no other insulation matches
Foam board’s biggest advantage is that you can put it on the outside of the framing as a continuous sheet. Fiberglass can’t do that. Reflective can’t. Spray foam could, but the cost would be crazy.
Why that matters: studs and joists conduct heat straight through the wall. Your R-19 wall isn’t really R-19 in practice — about 20% of the wall is bare framing, which is more like R-5. A one-inch layer of polyiso on the outside covers those studs and brings the whole wall closer to its rated R.
Outside layer over house sheathing
Polyiso or XPS goes on top of the exterior sheathing, seams get taped, siding covers it. Adds R-6 to R-12 as a continuous layer that covers the studs.
Outside of a basement wall (underground)
XPS is the go-to. It rejects water, holds up under the dirt pressure, and doesn’t rot in the ground. Two inches gives you R-10 outside the concrete.
Under a concrete slab
EPS or XPS laid on the gravel before pouring the slab. Keeps heat from bleeding into the ground — essential for radiant-floor heat, worth having in any heated slab.
Over an existing brick or block wall
A masonry wall with no cavity to fill can still be insulated by gluing foam to the inside face, then adding furring and drywall. Cheaper and thinner than framing out a new stud wall.
Jobs where foam board is the wrong tool
Metal buildings and pole barns
The whole point of a metal building is a wide open run of purlins for fiberglass rolls. Foam board would need to be cut to fit between each purlin, screwed on one panel at a time, and taped at every seam — slow, expensive, and you’d still need something for the finished ceiling. Filling stud bays in a house wall
Cutting foam board to jam between studs is slow and wasteful, and it leaves gaps at every stud edge that need to be caulked or foamed. Fiberglass batts sized for standard bays go in as fast as the crew can walk. Cavity fill is not what foam board is for.
Any room where you want it quiet
Foam board bounces sound instead of absorbing it — basically no acoustic value. Interior walls, floors between apartments, anywhere sound matters — specify fiberglass, not foam board.
Left uncovered where a fire could reach it
All three foam types burn and give off toxic smoke. Code requires foam board on any interior surface to be covered by drywall — usually ½″. Bare foam in a garage, basement, or workshop is a code violation and a real fire hazard.
