Energy Saver — The Standard Way
The most common install method for vinyl-faced insulation in metal buildings. Unroll the fiberglass across the purlins from eave to ridge, drop the roof panel on top, and the panel holds it all in place. Fastest, cheapest, and the right pick unless your build has a specific reason to do something else.
How Buying Works — Three Steps
Different shops, same method
Some sellers call this the "Energy Saver" install. Others call it "single-layer," "over-purlin," or "the classic sandwich." A few name it after the facing you use with it. All of these describe the same thing: insulation on top of the purlins, roof panel on top of the insulation, screws through both into the purlin below. If two sales reps use two different names, they’re almost certainly talking about this method.

Facing you see from below
Looking up from inside the building, you see the vinyl or metalized facing of the roll. This is your ceiling — no drywall needed for most ag and light-commercial jobs.

Fiberglass
The insulation itself — 2½″ thick for R-8 up to 12″ for R-38. Hangs between the purlins with a slight downward bow.

Purlins
The steel framing that runs across the roof, usually 4 or 5 feet apart. The insulation gets pinched against the top of each purlin when the roof panel goes on.

Metal roof panel
The weather barrier. Screws pass through the insulation into the purlins — that’s what holds the whole thing together.

Fastest install
Two people can insulate a 40×60 metal building roof in an afternoon. No screws for the insulation itself — the roof panel does the holding.
Cheapest material
Standard tabs on both sides of the roll — nothing extra. Tape is the only add-on.
Works with any facing
All four of our facings work with this method: VR-R Plus, WMP-10, WMP-30, and WMP-50. Pick the facing based on climate, not on install method.
Owner-builder friendly
You don’t need any special tools. Utility knife, tape measure, chalk line, and enough hands to walk the roll up the roof.
And how to keep them from happening
Problem 1: The pinch at each purlin
The roof panel squishes the insulation almost flat at every purlin — a 6″ batt gets pinched down to about ¼″ where the screw goes in. That’s a cold line running the length of every purlin. In cold weather it shows up as frost or condensation lines on the ceiling. Over years, those wet spots stain and can damage the facing.
How to prevent it: If the building will be heated or air conditioned, switch to Long Tab. The longer flap wraps over each purlin and stops the pinch.
Problem 2: Sag between purlins
If the crew unrolls the insulation loose, the roll can sag several inches between purlins after the roof panel goes on. The fiberglass gets thin where it sags and thick where it’s pinched. The ceiling ends up looking pillowed — and no trim can hide it.
How to prevent it: Keep firm tension on the roll while unrolling. On steep pitches or bay widths over 5 feet, run a temporary support wire perpendicular to the purlins to hold the insulation up until the roof panel goes on.
