Banding — For Retrofits and Curved Roofs
The install method that unlocks insulation retrofits. Metal strap runs across the underside of the purlins in a grid, holding the insulation up from below. No roof panel needed to press it in place. Slower and more expensive than the other two methods, but often the only real option for existing buildings or curved (Quonset-style) roofs.

What to do when the roof is already on
The Energy Saver and Long Tab methods both need the roof panel to hold the insulation in place. Unroll the fiberglass across the purlins, drop the panel on top, done. Neither method works if the roof is already installed — you can’t slide insulation between the panel and the purlins from below.
Banding solves that. A grid of metal strap fastened to the underside of the purlins gives you an independent support system that the insulation sits on. Insulation goes in from below, rests on the strap, and stays there. That opens up two situations that otherwise wouldn’t be possible:
- Retrofits into existing metal buildings. A pole barn built in 1998 with no insulation, or a shop where the owner decided years later to insulate. Banding is the only realistic way to add insulation without pulling the roof.
- Curved-roof buildings. Quonset huts, arched ag buildings — anywhere the roof follows a curve. A flat roll can’t lie against a curved panel from above; from below, the banding grid holds it snug against the curve.
Four things every banding job needs
Metal strap
Sold on 500-foot rolls. Standard ¾″ wide. Figure about one roll per 1,000 sq ft of ceiling at 24″ spacing. We stock banding with matching screws as an add-on to any order.
Self-drilling banding screws
Sized to pass through the band and bite into the steel purlin without a pilot hole. Figure one screw per purlin per band line.
Fiberglass insulation
Faced (vinyl or foil) if you want a finished ceiling below the banding; unfaced if you plan to add a drop ceiling or drywall. All four facings work with banding.
Tape (if using faced insulation)
Same tape used with any faced install — matched to the facing. Vinyl tape for vinyl facings, foil tape for metalized.
Four situations where this is the honest answer
Retrofit into an uninsulated building
You bought a bare pole barn or shop and now want to insulate it. The roof is on. Pulling the roof to add insulation the standard way is impractical. Banding lets you add R-19, R-25, or R-30 with the crew working entirely from inside.
Curved-roof buildings (Quonset, arched)
A flat fiberglass roll can’t conform to a curved roof panel from above — it bunches and gaps at the top of the arch. From below, the banding grid holds the insulation snug against the curve and lets the fiberglass fill the space cleanly.
Adding R-value on top of what’s there
Building already has R-11 or R-19 from an old install, and you want to bump the total. Banding a second layer below the existing insulation is the least-invasive way to boost the R without touching the roof.
Cold-climate buildings where every degree of R matters
Because the insulation hangs below the purlins instead of getting pinched against them, banding delivers the least amount of cold-line bridging of the three methods. In cold-climate heated buildings, banding actually beats Energy Saver on performance — at the cost of more labor.
What you accept when you pick banding
- Two to three times the labor of Energy Saver. Hanging strap overhead, driving screws into every purlin, and feeding rolls up from below all take longer. A 40×60 building runs a two-person crew close to a full day instead of an afternoon.
- Overhead work is harder. Every fastener goes above your head. Plan for scaffolding or a scissor lift — ladder-only jobs are exhausting on anything bigger than a garage.
- You’ll see the banding grid on the finished ceiling. Fine for shops and ag buildings, but it reads industrial in a finished space. If the ceiling will be looked at, plan on a drop ceiling or drywall below.
- More material cost. Add the strap, the screws, and the extra tape. Figure another $0.15 to $0.30 per square foot on top of the insulation price.
