Spray Foam, Plainly Explained
The highest-performing insulation per inch, and the most expensive by a wide margin. Here’s what it is, the two kinds you can buy, and honest notes on when the extra cost is worth it — and when fiberglass will do the same job for a third of the money.
How Buying Works — Three Steps
Two chemicals meet at a spray tip — and expand
Spray foam is two liquid chemicals that arrive at the job site in separate barrels. The two components meet at the tip of a spray gun, react on contact, and expand up to 100 times their liquid volume in seconds. The foam skins over in under a minute and hardens in about a day.
You can buy it in two forms — soft or hard — and they behave very differently:
Light, spongy, lets moisture through

Dense, waterproof, air-tight
- R-6.5 per inch — highest of any common insulation
- Blocks moisture

The one thing spray foam does that nothing else does: it fills every crack it touches. It expands around wires, pipes, and framing without gaps — so the insulation AND the air seal happen in one step.
Where the extra money actually goes to work
Air leaking in and out of your house or building costs you 25 to 40% of your heating and cooling. Fiberglass batts don’t stop air — wind blows right through them. Every wire hole, every plumbing chase, every gap where two boards meet leaks air unless somebody seals it with caulk or foam separately.
Hard spray foam skips that step. The foam expands into every crack as a byproduct of installing it. In a house with a hundred little penetrations, that’s a real labor saving on top of the material cost. In a simple metal building bay with almost no penetrations, it isn’t.
The honest math
A 3,000 sq ft house insulated with R-19 fiberglass batts and a careful air-sealing job (caulk around every hole, taped sheathing, foam at the ridges) will perform within 5 to 10% of the same house insulated with hard spray foam — for about a third of the cost. The catch is that most crews skip half the air-sealing details. Spray foam is partly a defense against that: it makes skipping impossible because the air seal IS the insulation.
Jobs where the extra money is worth it
Cathedral ceilings, roofs with no attic
When the ceiling is also the roof, the assembly needs to be air-tight or warm inside air will drift up, hit the cold underside of the roof, and turn to water. Hard spray foam sprayed right against the roof solves this. Fiberglass in the same spot is a moisture problem waiting ten years to surface as stains and rot.
Basement rim joists
Where the framing meets the sill plate on top of the foundation is the leakiest, most condensation-prone spot in most houses. Two inches of hard foam along every rim joist eliminates the biggest air leak in the building and pays for itself in a couple of winters.
Basement walls
Hard foam applied to the inside of a concrete basement wall gives you insulation and moisture protection in one shot. Fiberglass against a basement wall is a chronic mold problem from foundation moisture bleeding through the concrete.
Weird-shaped spaces — timber frame, log cabin, retrofit
Any space where the bays are odd sizes, blocked by stuff, or hard to get to. Foam expands into every gap. Cutting fiberglass batts to fit a non-square cavity is slow, imprecise, or both.
Jobs where fiberglass is honestly the right pick
Metal buildings and pole barns
The metal roof and wall panels are already the main air barrier. There are almost no penetrations to seal. The whole air-seal advantage that justifies spray foam elsewhere disappears here — and the cost gap doesn’t. A 5,000 sq ft pole barn insulated with R-19 fiberglass rolls delivered runs about $5,000. Rooms where sound matters
Hard foam is dense enough that sound goes right through it. Any wall or ceiling where you care about noise — home theaters, offices, hotels, bedrooms next to a garage — should be fiberglass, not spray foam.
Anywhere you might want to get back in later
Once foam is cured, it’s basically permanent. Adding a wire, fixing a leak, running new plumbing — all of that means cutting foam out and re-spraying it. Expensive and messy. Fiberglass batts pull out and go back in minutes. If the space is likely to be worked on again, that flexibility is worth real money.
DIY projects
Spray foam needs calibrated gear, protective clothing, and enough experience to get the mix right. Bad foam off-gasses fumes for years and never hits its rated R-value. Every major foam brand requires a licensed sprayer. The little DIY spray cans are fine for filling gaps around a window, but they’re not a substitute for whole-wall foam.
