What Drives Insulation Cost?
Total fiberglass insulation cost comes down to four components. Each is calculated independently and shown as a separate line item on every quote so you can see exactly where your dollars go.
1. Material Cost (Manufacturer Wholesale)
Material cost is the per-square-foot rate the certified mill charges for the rolls themselves. Ranges from $0.48/sq ft (R-8 VR-R Plus) to $1.42/sq ft (R-30 WMP-50). Material cost scales linearly with both square footage and R-value — doubling square footage doubles material cost; upgrading from R-13 to R-19 increases per-sq-ft material cost by roughly 40 percent.
2. LTL Freight
Freight is the trucking cost to deliver the order from the manufacturer to your site. Ranges from $395 (most central states) to $745 (far Northeast). Freight is a single charge per shipment regardless of order size, so it represents a higher percentage of small orders and a lower percentage of large orders.
3. Volume Discount (Material Over $10,000)
Material orders exceeding $10,000 receive an automatic $250 discount applied to the order total. This is a fixed credit that does not scale with order size beyond the threshold — the same $250 applies whether material is $10,001 or $40,000.
4. Service Fee (Your Offer)
The service fee covers sourcing, freight coordination, specification support, and order management. Unlike retail pricing where this margin is hidden in the unit price, here you offer the amount you are comfortable paying within a published acceptable range. Fair offers within range are accepted same-day.
Wholesale Cost vs Retail Cost
The single biggest variable in any insulation project budget is whether you are paying wholesale or retail. The material is identical; the price difference is structural.
| R-19 VR-R Plus, 3,000 sq ft | Wholesale (Here) | Typical Retail |
|---|---|---|
| Material cost | $2,700 | $3,900 |
| Freight | $445 | $445 (or bundled) |
| Markup or service fee | ~$472 (15%, offered) | Hidden in unit price |
| Project total | ~$3,617 | ~$4,500-$5,200 |
The savings on the example above run $900 to $1,600. On commercial projects (10,000+ sq ft), the savings frequently exceed $10,000 because retail percentage markups compound on larger orders while the offered service fee here scales down as a percentage.
Typical Insulation Cost by Project Size
Rough project budget ranges by building type and size, all assuming R-19 walls plus R-25 ceiling with WMP-10 facing:
| Project | Total Sq Ft | Wholesale + Freight | Total Delivered (with fee) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-car garage | ~1,000 | ~$1,500 | ~$1,800-$2,000 |
| 30x40 shop | ~2,900 | ~$3,500 | ~$4,000-$4,500 |
| 40x60 metal building | ~5,200 | ~$6,000 | ~$6,700-$7,400 |
| 50x80 commercial | ~8,200 | ~$9,500 | ~$10,500-$11,500 |
| 50x100 warehouse | ~10,400 | ~$12,000 | ~$13,000-$14,000 |
| 60x100 distribution | ~12,400 | ~$14,500 | ~$15,500-$17,000 |
Use the calculator above for your specific project for an exact figure rather than ballpark range. Detailed pricing by R-value and facing is on the insulation cost page.
How to Reduce Insulation Project Cost
Insulation Cost Calculator FAQ
What does the insulation cost calculator include?
The calculator returns the manufacturer wholesale material cost and LTL freight to your state. On the order page you then offer the service fee within a published acceptable range, which gets added to the wholesale total for your final budget.
How much does fiberglass insulation cost for a typical project?
Wholesale fiberglass insulation cost ranges from about $1,000 for a small garage to $50,000+ for a large warehouse. Mid-sized projects (40x60 metal building, R-19 walls and roof) typically run $5,500 to $7,000 delivered including freight and a fair service fee offer.
Is wholesale insulation cheaper than retail?
Yes. Retail fiberglass insulation typically runs 30 to 50 percent above the manufacturer wholesale rate because retailers add their markup to every roll. Cost-plus wholesale pricing passes the actual factory cost through — savings on a mid-sized project typically run $1,500 to $4,000.
Does insulation cost change by state?
Material cost per square foot is the same nationwide. Only freight changes by state, ranging from $395 to $745 for LTL delivery. The calculator automatically adds the correct freight when you select your delivery state.
What is the service fee in addition to material cost?
The service fee is a separate charge for Insulation Overstocks work sourcing the order, coordinating freight, and providing specification support. You offer the amount you are comfortable paying within a published acceptable range that scales by order size — typically 15-30 percent of wholesale on small orders, dropping to 3-6 percent on commercial-scale orders.
Is the insulation calculator accurate?
Yes. Pricing reflects current wholesale rates from NAIMA-certified U.S. manufacturers and is updated as manufacturer pricing changes. Freight rates reflect current LTL carrier rates by state. The only variable not auto-calculated is the offered service fee, which is your choice within the published acceptable range.
