Using the Batt Insulation Calculator
The calculator above prices fiberglass batt and roll insulation at wholesale rates. There are four inputs and one output. Enter each input in order, and the wholesale subtotal updates instantly.
1. Pick the Facing
The dropdown lists all four NAIMA-certified vinyl facings (VR-R Plus, WMP-10, WMP-30, WMP-50) plus the black-faced variants. Choose the facing that matches your application: VR-R Plus for general-purpose value, WMP-10 for standard metal building walls in dry climates, WMP-30 for humid climates or 8-foot-wide roll preference, WMP-50 for premium commercial and cold storage. Detailed facing comparison is on the facing comparison page.
2. Select an R-Value
R-values from R-8 (light-duty condensation control) through R-30 (cold-climate ceilings) are available. The right R-value depends on your IECC climate zone and what surface you are insulating. Quick guide: R-13 for 2x4 walls, R-19 for 2x6 walls, R-25 for cold-climate walls or any climate’s ceiling, R-30 for ceilings and attics in Zones 4 and above. The R-Value Climate Zone Guide covers this in detail.
3. Enter Square Footage
Total square footage is the surface area you need to insulate — walls plus ceiling for a complete envelope. Always add 5-10 percent for cut waste, overlap at seams, and obstructions around penetrations. The calculator caps input at 40,000 sq ft; orders above that should be quoted by phone for volume pricing.
4. Choose Delivery State
The state dropdown adds the LTL freight rate to your wholesale subtotal. Freight ranges from $395 (most central states) to $745 (Maine, New York, Northern Michigan). Hawaii and Alaska are not eligible for LTL freight; call for special quotes.
What the Calculator Returns
The result box shows three lines: material cost (manufacturer wholesale rate), freight to your state (LTL ground), and wholesale subtotal. The service fee is offered separately on the order page after you finalize the spec, using a published acceptable range based on your wholesale total.
Batt vs Roll Insulation — What's the Difference?
The terms “batt” and “roll” are sometimes used interchangeably, but they describe slightly different package formats. The calculator above prices both because the underlying material, R-value, and wholesale cost per square foot are identical.
Batt Insulation (Pre-Cut Pieces)
Batt insulation ships in pre-cut rectangular pieces, typically 48 inches long with widths sized to fit standard stud bays (15" for 16" on-center framing, 23" for 24" on-center framing). Batts are the dominant residential format because they install fast in standard cavity dimensions without needing to cut to length.
Roll Insulation (Continuous Length)
Roll insulation ships in continuous lengths, typically 30 ft or 50 ft per roll, in widths from 4 ft to 8 ft. The installer cuts to length at the job site to match the actual cavity. Rolls dominate the metal building and pole barn market because they reduce the seam count across large overhead and wall runs.
Why It Matters for Pricing
It does not. Wholesale fiberglass pricing per square foot is the same whether the material ships as batts or rolls. The calculator above returns the same per-sq-ft rate regardless of format. Format selection happens at order time based on what fits your project best.
How to Calculate Batt Insulation Square Footage
Accurate square footage is the input that drives the entire wholesale cost calculation. Common sizing methods:
Method 1: Building Plans
If you have building plans, sum the wall area (perimeter × eave height, minus door and window openings) plus the ceiling/roof area (length × width). Add 5-10 percent for waste. This is the most accurate method.
Method 2: Physical Measurement
Measure each wall length and the building height. For pole barns and metal buildings, the perimeter is typically two long walls plus two end walls. Multiply perimeter by eave height for wall area. Multiply length by width for ceiling area. Subtract roughly 100 sq ft for a standard service door and small window if applicable.
Method 3: Quick Estimate by Building Size
For ballpark planning before final measurements, use these typical total-insulation requirements (walls + ceiling for a complete envelope):
- 24x24 garage (9 ft eaves): ~1,000 sq ft total
- 30x40 pole barn (12 ft eaves): ~2,800 sq ft total
- 40x60 metal building (14 ft eaves): ~5,200 sq ft total
- 50x80 commercial (16 ft eaves): ~8,200 sq ft total
- 50x100 warehouse (18 ft eaves): ~10,400 sq ft total
- 60x100 distribution center (20 ft eaves): ~12,400 sq ft total
Always re-measure before placing the final order. The calculator handles any input from a few hundred to 40,000 square feet with the same itemized output.
Batt Insulation Cost by R-Value
Material cost varies by R-value (thickness) and facing. The calculator above pulls live wholesale rates from the manufacturer. Quick reference:
| R-Value | Thickness | VR-R Plus | WMP-10/30/50 |
|---|---|---|---|
| R-8 | 2.5" | $0.48 | $0.54 |
| R-10 | 3.0" | $0.52 | $0.58 |
| R-11 | 3.5" | $0.55 | $0.61 |
| R-13 | 3.625" to 4" | $0.65 | $0.71 |
| R-19 | 6.25" | $0.90 | $0.96 |
| R-25 | 8.0" | $1.13 | $1.19 |
| R-30 | 9.5" | $1.36 | $1.42 (WMP-50 only) |
Black-faced variants run roughly 4-8 cents per square foot higher than their white-faced equivalents. See the insulation cost page for full pricing detail across all facings and R-values.

Batt Insulation Calculator FAQ
What is a batt insulation calculator?
A batt insulation calculator estimates how much fiberglass batt or roll insulation you need for a project plus the wholesale material cost. Enter facing type, R-value, square footage, and delivery state and the calculator returns material cost, freight, and a wholesale subtotal.
How many square feet of batt insulation do I need?
Calculate the total surface area you need to insulate (walls plus ceiling) and add 5-10 percent for cut waste and overlap. A 1,200 sq ft conditioned space typically needs 2,400-2,800 sq ft of batt insulation total when walls and ceiling are both covered.
What is the difference between batt and roll insulation?
Batt insulation is sold in pre-cut rectangular pieces designed to fit specific cavity dimensions. Roll insulation is sold in continuous lengths that the installer cuts to fit. Most vinyl-faced fiberglass insulation for metal buildings and pole barns is sold as rolls; most residential wall insulation is sold as batts. The calculator handles both formats identically.
How much does fiberglass batt insulation cost per square foot?
Does the calculator include freight?
Yes. Select your delivery state and the calculator automatically adds the LTL freight rate, which ranges from $395 to $745 depending on distance. The service fee is offered separately on the order page after you confirm your insulation specification.
What R-values does the calculator support?
The calculator supports R-8, R-10, R-11, R-13, R-19, R-25, and R-30 across all four major NAIMA-certified facings (VR-R Plus, WMP-10, WMP-30, WMP-50) plus black-faced variants. R-values not shown in the dropdown can be quoted by phone.
Can I use the calculator for residential batts?
Yes. The calculator prices fiberglass batt insulation at wholesale regardless of end-use. Residential applications, commercial buildings, metal buildings, pole barns, and outbuildings all use the same input format and pricing structure.
